UKC Announces Recognition of Treeing Tennessee Brindle
August 1, 2017
United Kennel Club welcomes the Treeing Tennessee Brindle to its list of recognized breeds, effective July 1, 2017. The breed is in the Scenthound Group.
The Treeing Tennessee Brindle is a scenthound used for running small game such as squirrel and raccoon, as well as bigger game such as bobcat, cougar, and bear. This breed is a medium-built, American-bred dog that has been around since the colonial days in America. The history of this breeds origin was not recorded on paper, but was passed down verbally through generations of breeders. Also known as Brindle Cur Stock, Old Brindle Bear Dogs, Tennessee Brindle Cur, and Hunting Bulls, it is said that these all-around hunting dogs started from a cross between an Old English Bulldog and a Virginia Saddleback hound. The Treeing Tennessee Brindle originated in the East and moved West along The Trail of Tears as the Cherokee Indians made their way with their hunting dogs. Today, the breed can be found along that same route, but is also spread all over the U.S.
